Abstract

Student’s attachment to their school (school belongingness) is an important aspect that can help students to be more motivated and achieve optimally at school as proposed by Goodenow (1993). Goodenow describes school belongingness as a condition when students feel personally accepted, valued, involved and supported in the social environment of the school so that they feel connected to and attached to their school. The results of the review conducted in the 2023 UNTAR Thematic KKN MBKM activities a phenomenon of low learning motivation in young students in the Belitung district which is one of the factors that Belitung teenagers prefer to work in the mines and make money easily and quickly compared to studying at school for years. This research was attended by 205 grade 7 and 8 students of SMPN 1 Sijuk Village, Belitung Regency. School belonging is measured using the Psychological Sense of School Membership Scale (PSSM). The PSSM reliability test using MacDonald'sW showed a score of 0.832 [0.799-0.866]. The results of the descriptive analysis show that the students of SMPN Sijuk Village, Belitung Regency have a fairly high level of school belonging (M = 3.75, SD = 0.39). There was no significant difference in school belongingness between students in grades 7 and 8 (t(203)=1.531, p>=0.05). In addition to school belongingness which is quite high, this study also shows that there is no significant difference of teacher's treatment of students between classes.
