Abstract

Globally, there has been a demographic change in which the elderly population is increasing. Indonesia itself has entered the old population structure since 2021. So that the health and welfare of the elderly is one of the important things in current social problems. One way to help the elderly achieve Healthy Aging is to provide opportunities for the elderly to be able to stay active and have interactions with other people. Research shows that having contact with nature can be beneficial for improving human mood, cognition and health to improve human quality of life. However, not all elderly people have easy access to nature, so assistance is needed, such as using the concept of biophilic design in design. Biophilic design is a form of architectural design that considers humans as organisms and focuses on efforts to achieve happiness and well-being through the mental and physical aspects of the body. The purpose of this research is to find out the relationship between nature and humans and the impact of biophilic design in improving the quality of life of the elderly and how to apply the principles of biophilic design in design so that it can benefit the elderly. The method used is the case study method which analyzes 2 case studies using the principles of biophilic design by Stephen Kellert in the book Nature by Design: The Practice of Biophilic Design. Data collection was carried out through literature studies in the form of data and reports that can support this research topic. The results showed that biophilic design can create different experiences and spatial atmospheres according to the application of attributes in the principles of biophilic design. In addition, biophilic design can present the presence of nature which can improve the quality of life of the elderly.

The Practice of Biophilic Design.
