Abstract

ABSTRACT

Families with patrilineal cultural backgrounds such as the Minang, Javanese and Chinese emphasize that the father's duty is to earn a living, while the mother's duty is to take care of the children and the household. Many highly educated women are willing to leave office work and decide to return to their nature as a full-time mother. Mother’s role has a big influence in creating family happiness and prosperity. As time went by, full--time mother experienced parental burnout due to new routines. This research consists of three variables, parental burnout as independent variable and family well-being as dependent variable. These two variables are mediated by resilience. Parental burnout is a fatigue syndrome caused by excessive chronic stress in the role of mother. This is caused by household work and childcare that are never completed in daily life which results in boredom, stress and extreme physical and psychological exhaustion. Resilience is the ability to bounce back in overcoming difficulties and stress. Family well-being is the emotional and physical well-being in a family. This research will use quantitative methods. The three measuring instruments that will be included in the questionnaire of this research are Parental Burnout Assessment (PBA), Subjective Well-being For Mother (SWB-M) and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Questionnaires will be distributed personally to 347 full-time mothers who previously have worked at least six months and still have school-aged children. This research proves that resilience is a good mediator for full-ftime mom who is experiencing parental burnout to gain subjective well-being.
