Abstract

HIV has become a major health problem with physical, financial, social, and psychological impact. It causes individuals to have low self-compassion. Low self-compassion is reflected in negative attitudes and behaviors that are detrimental to oneself. Art therapy as an effective method in overcoming psychological problems and improving the quality of individual self also has the potential to improve self-compassion. This study aims to discover whether art therapy is effective in increasing self-compassion in people with HIV / AIDS (PWHA). Self compassion will be measured using the Self Compassion Scale (SCS). Participants in this study were PWHA aged 20-40 years and did not attend psychological intervention sessions individually or in groups. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. This is a within subject quasi-experiment research with a mixed method approach. Data were analyzed using non-parametric analysis technique, namely The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The art therapy session consisted of 8 sessions. Based on the test results obtained, art therapy was effective in increasing self-compassion of PWHA with Z = -1,992, p = 0.046. Five of the six participants showed an increase in self-compassion. Future studies are expected to examine the relationship between demographic factors and self-compassion, increasing the diversity of participants' characteristics and art therapy sessions.
