Abstract

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 pandemic has created an emergency situation in education field to change the face-to-face learning system becomes online learning. Previous studies have shown that online learning give a negative impact to student’s psychological condition that causes a decrease in student’s Psychological Well-Being. A decrease in Psychological Well-Being will led to a tendency for student to use the internet impulsively, compulsively, and uncontrollably that can cause further problems called Problematic Internet Use (PIU). This study aims to examine the relationship between Psychological Well-Being and Problematic Internet Use (PIU) among university students that undergoing online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study is a non-experimental correlation study with quantitative approach, involving 400 participants obtained using purposive sampling. The instruments used are Psychological Well-Being scale from the Research and Measurement Section of Faculty of Psychology Universitas Tarumanagara and the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 (GPIUS 2). Hypothesis testing using pearson correlation test analysis obtains r(400) = -0.360; p = 0.000 < 0.05, reveals that there is a significant negative relationship between Psychological Well-Being and Problematic Internet Use (PIU). This result means that when Psychological Well-Being increases, accordingly Problematic Internet Use (PIU) decreases, and vice versa. Furthermore, no significant difference was found in Problematic Internet Use (PIU) variables based on intensity of internet use for professional purposes. Meanwhile, there is a significant difference in Problematic Internet Use (PIU) based on the intensity of internet use for general purposes
