Abstract

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation of the dimension of family communication and problematic smartphone use (PSU) in college student during pandemic COVID-19. Family communication consist of two dimensions, which are conversation orientation and conformity orientation. This study involved 202 active college students who are learning remotely, living in DKI Jakarta Province, living with one or two parents, and having at least one smartphone. This is a quantitative nonexperimental research which is using Pearson Correlation to examine the correlation between two variables. The Revised Family Communication Pattern Instrument (RFCP) developed by Ritchie and Fitzpatrick (1990) and Smartphone Addiction Inventory-Short Form developed by Lin et al. (2016) are used as measuring instrument. The analysis results reveal that the correlation between conversational orientation and PSU is r (200) = 0.33 and p < .001 and the correlation between conformity orientation and PSU is r (200) = 0.45 and p < .001. These results show that there is positive and significant correlation between the dimensions of family communication and problematic smartphone use.
