PENERAPAN PENDEKATAN KOMUNIKASI TERAPEUTIK DI RUANG EKSPRESI DAN HARAPAN BAGI ANGGOTA YAYASAN KASIH ANAK KANKER INDONESIA

Abstract

Communication is a fundamental aspect of daily life, serving as a medium to express thoughts, seek solutions, and engage in self-reflection. However, children living with cancer often face challenges in maintaining communication with the outside environment due to prolonged medical treatments and their vulnerable physical condition. Initial observations revealed that their daily activities are mostly confined to the Foundation and Hospital, limiting opportunities to interact with peers and society. This situation creates a gap in social experiences compared to other children of the same age and may lead to difficulties when reintegrating into the community. To address this issue, the Community Service Team from the Faculty of Communication, Universitas Tarumanagara, implemented a program in collaboration with the Yayasan Kasih Kanker Anak Indonesia (Indonesian Children’s Cancer Foundation). The solution offered was the application of therapeutic communication approach, a communication process designed to support physical, mental, and emotional recovery. Activities were carefully designed to avoid exhausting the children, including self-introduction, thematic games, self-expression sessions, and sharing circles. These activities emphasized both interpersonal communication and self-talk, providing children with new experiences like those of their peers outside the Foundation. Evaluation of the program showed highly positive responses from the children, who were able to participate in almost all activities enthusiastically. The Foundation’s management also expressed appreciation for the program’s impact. This initiative aligns with SDG 3: Good. Health and well-being, as it aims to build self-confidence, provide entertainment, and create positive experiences for children whose activities are limited by their health conditions.


 


ABSTRAK


Komunikasi merupakan aspek fundamental dalam kehidupan sehari-hari yang berfungsi sebagai sarana untuk mencurahkan pikiran, mencari solusi, hingga media introspeksi diri. Namun, anak-anak yang mengalami kanker sering menghadapi masalah kurangnya komunikasi dengan lingkungan di luar proses pengobatan yang mereka jalani dalam jangka waktu relatif panjang. Berdasarkan hasil survei awal, diketahui bahwa aktivitas mereka sebagian besar terbatas pada Yayasan dan Rumah Sakit, sehingga jarang berinteraksi dengan masyarakat luas. Kondisi ini berpotensi menimbulkan kesenjangan pengalaman sosial dibandingkan anak-anak seusia mereka, serta dapat menimbulkan kesulitan ketika nantinya kembali ke tengah masyarakat. Untuk menjawab permasalahan tersebut, tim pengabdian kepada masyarakat dari Fakultas Ilmu Komunikasi Universitas Tarumanagara menawarkan solusi melalui penerapan elemen Komunikasi Terapeutik, yaitu proses komunikasi yang berfokus pada pemulihan fisik, mental, dan emosional pasien. Yayasan Kasih Kanker Anak Indonesia ditetapkan sebagai mitra dalam pelaksanaan program ini. Kegiatan dirancang agar tidak menguras tenaga anak-anak, meliputi perkenalan diri, permainan tematik, sesi ekspresi diri, serta sharing circle. Seluruh aktivitas menekankan pentingnya komunikasi dengan sesama maupun komunikasi dengan diri sendiri, sehingga anak-anak memperoleh pengalaman baru yang menyerupai interaksi sosial anak-anak pada umumnya. Evaluasi kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa anak-anak mampu mengikuti hampir seluruh rangkaian acara dengan baik, serta memberikan respon positif yang tercermin dari antusiasme mereka. Pengurus Yayasan juga memberikan apresiasi atas manfaat kegiatan ini. Program ini selaras dengan SDG 3: Kesehatan dan kesejahteraan yang baik, karena bertujuan membangun kepercayaan diri, menghibur, dan memberikan pengalaman positif bagi anak-anak dengan keterbatasan aktivitas akibat kondisi kesehatan mereka.
