Abstract

Technological advancement in education demands learning media that are not only functional but also communicative and visually appealing. At the high school level, science practicum activities often face challenges in bridging technical concepts with adequate visual approaches. This PKM activity aims to design a practical learning aid using LED Flex technology combined with visual characters, applying a Visual Communication Design (VCD) approach and the Design Thinking method. LED Flex, as a flexible and energy-efficient lighting technology, is considered effective in visualizing concepts such as simple electric circuits and energy flow in an interactive manner—key elements in physics-based science education closely related to electrical engineering. The integration of visual characters is designed to enhance students’ emotional engagement and improve conceptual understanding through symbolic and communicative representations. The project follows the five stages of Design Thinking: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test, to produce design solutions that are user-centered and responsive to practical classroom needs. Characters are developed using simple visuals, clear forms, and harmonious color schemes to ensure optimal functionality within the limited display area of LED media. The expected outcome is an interactive learning medium that enhances learning effectiveness, encourages student participation, and improves information retention. This study contributes not only to the practical development of educational media for high school science but also offers theoretical insights into the use of visual character design in flexible, technology-based media for science education.
